Jared and I, ever the cautious couple, have been super stingy with our kids on their first birthdays.  In place of a cake, they get their very own, very first muffin.  Porter is the luckiest of the three--his was chocolate chocolate chip!  (I knew he would be excited for chocolate chips, as he found one on the floor months ago and began scouring the place for more, putting everything in his mouth in hopes of finding something equally tasty!)  Nora got a brown sugar muffin, and poor Lia got a plain-old biscuity muffin.  Of course, she didn't care but thought she'd hit the jackpot when we set the WHOLE thing in front of her!  The girls both proceeded to stuff the entire muffin in, just about choking themselves in the process.

This is where we got a surprise from Little Port.  He just sat there after we all sang to him, holding his muffin and staring at everyone.  Minutes went by without him figuring out that he held a treasure in his sweet little hands!  Jared finally got a muffin and showed Porter that he was eating it.  When a morsel from Jared's muffin landed on Porter's tray, Porter quickly snatched it up and ate it!  Finally, one of the girls smooshed Porter's muffin onto his mouth, and the fun began!

Just look at those cheeks--chock full of chocolately goodness!

Once muffin went in, Porter didn't let it back out!  He did a fantastic job at eating most of that muffin.  He kept sticking his finger in his mouth, trying to push or keep more muffin in so that he would get to eat all of it.  (I love that the muffins were 100% whole wheat, with oat bran in them.  Three cheers for nutrition!) After a while, Port discovered that the chocolate chips were especially tasty.  When he found one, he would hold it up in triumph for all to see, as if to say, "Be happy for me--I just found the tastiest part!"

Thanks for the fun party, Porter.  You're the very best one-year-old in the whole world!  We love our boy!
