Nora also greatly appreciates the artistic talents of her Dad, but for a different reason. She likes to get him to draw her pictures to color during Sacrament Meeting. About 20 minutes before we leave for church, you will find Nora directing Jared, pencil in hand. Jared uses this medium to get a reaction from Nora, so he will always somehow make the drawing his own in a way that is not all that amusing to Nora.
Below is the drawing Nora took to the dreaded Stake Conference (GASP!) a couple weeks ago. It was a new thing for Jared--the coveted hidden pictures drawing! (Didn't you always want to be the one to find that first in a magazine or coloring book?) It's a bit beat up at this stage, but you get the idea.
Here is the part where Jared tried to bug Nora. For our very literal daughter, asking her to find #9 would be ludicrous!
In 2011, Nora told Santa that she wanted a roller unicorn for Christmas. As you might imagine, this left Santa a bit in the dark as to what to do. Here is an excerpt from my journal about the dilemma to discover what a roller unicorn actually was, written December 20, 2011. It should give you a real feel for what goes on between these two.
Jared has had so much fun this week with roller unicorns. When he was home for lunch on Tuesday, he sat down at the girls little table and drew a roller unicorn for Nora. This unicorn had a single wheel integrated into the center of its body. He left it there for Nora to find. When she did, she promptly called him at work to tell him it was all wrong. Jared enjoyed coming up with roller unicorn concepts so much! He drew three more roller unicorns over the next few days, greatly distressing Nora each time because they were all wrong. Whenever Nora told him he was doing it all wrong, she only gave him more ideas for a new kind of roller unicorn. (Please see the attached pictures for the full effect.) Nora hated the second roller unicorn so much that she tried to recycle it upon receipt. In the end, she drew a huge spider web and spider on it with this explanation, "When I draw a spider web on something, that means I HATE it."
And now we move on from one artist to the next: Nora. Nora's preferred medium is anything she can find in the recycle bin plus markers, paint, scissors, and tape. She calls her projects "junk sculptures". Below, you will see a very rudimentary junk sculpture that has brought Nora the ultimate in joy. Here is another journal excerpt, dated January 27, 2013:
After finishing her homework on Tuesday, Nora asked if she could make a junk sculpture. I have learned to always let her do this, as it keeps her well-entertained. She uses junk from the recycle bin. This time, she made a family chart out of some crinkled brown packing paper and cut up pieces of a box, which she hung on the wall. She also made a mailbox, the front of which is painted with these words, "Pleas send any questions for Nora heare." She then informed the family members that it was her mailbox and they could post questions and letters to her if they wished. Her sweet Daddy actually remembered and wrote her a page of questions at lunch the next day. Upon arriving home from school, Nora immediately checked her mailbox and sat down to answer the questions. Jared got a kick out of this, and has since written her two more pages of questions. Jared always puts something in his questions that is sure to get a rise out of Nora.
This was the first page of questions, and it doesn't actually have a question in it designed to get a reaction out of Nora. However, I love what she answered to question #3--ha, ha!
Nora finally lost interest in the questions. I found the fourth page of them from her Dad left blank. She explained, "He already knows all the answers to these." So, I guess we'll have to wait and see what they have in store for us next.
I'm sure glad to be along for the ride.
